Scrapbooking a New Hobby

Time Capsule: Weekly Challenge #47… Extended

I knew right away that I was going to scrapbook about my newest hobby, making fabric flower accessories, when I saw this challenge. I also knew that I wanted to include extracted flowers on my page to both give it a dimensional look and to add focus to what it is that I make. The rest of the layout, I just made up along the way.

Sometimes, I can envision my layout exactly how I want it to look before I start. Other times, I literally have to try different things adding and taking away various elements, moving items around, cropping and shaping photos, etc. I used the latter process for this layout.

It took me almost a week to get it done from start to finish. I had to work on it for a bit, and then walk away because I couldn’t get it to come together. Finally, on like day 5, it just started to click. I’ve found that it helps me to have several layouts in development at one time. That way, when/if I get hung up on one, I can move on to another. That break in working on a page often lets me recoup my creativity and I’m able to finish it the next time I come back to it.

I generally start all of my pages the same way. First I identify the kit and/or photos I know I want to use. Then I open a new page in Photoshop, adding the pictures and the kit preview image to the page. I’ll also go ahead and add my journaling if I know what I want to say. Dates are a great thing to add at this point too – especially if you’re like me and have to rely on the properties of the photo to remind you when it was taken.

Sometimes, if I have a design in mind, I’ll use one of the layers and the pen tool to literally sketch out my page right in Photoshop. Many times, I’ll have several kits or different photos in mind for a layout so I’ll add them all to the page so I can see them together and decide what combination works best. I have a whole folder I keep with these drafted layouts so that anytime I have time to scrap, I have a reserve of my ideas from which I can pick up and run with.
