Can Scrapbooking Make You Skinny?

Today July Calendar Girl Jennifer Barrette shares a very personal peek into a part of her own “real life” scrapbooking journey …

One thing we would all admit is that scrapbooking can have us sitting on our butts a lot of the time. After a lifelong struggle with my weight, a hobby that has me sitting so much probably wasn’t the best idea, but I have found a way to work it to my advantage. Whether you are just trying to tone up, or are on a longer weight loss journey, scrapbooking can play an important roll. I lost 65 pounds last year and found that making layouts about my successes was really helpful to keep me motivated.

Here is one of my layouts –

I didn’t use a weight loss themed kit, but there are lots out there. You can also use your journaling to help you set goals and work through some of the emotional toll of being overweight, being on a diet plan, and just dealing with the lifestyle change of being a healthier you. I really love the simplicity of the next layout. It is just a nice snapshot of how the scrapbooker was feeling at this point in her weight loss journey.

A lot of experts say that keeping a weight loss journal can increase your chances of success. So why not make that journal something special? You can create scrapbooked worksheets to track your food/exercise, or even alter a little notebook to use as a food journal. Eating right and exercising isn’t easy or fun sometimes, so I found that incorporating my favorite hobby really helps make it more interesting. I love the bright fun colors of Amy R.’s journal here –

Another thing I have found helpful is “talking” with some of my digital friends about weight loss. A lot of scrapbooking forums have a little weight loss section devoted to keeping each other on track, trade healthy recipes, share success and vent about failures. Sometimes it can be hard to share something as personal as weight issues, but I find the internet to be a great way to find people that going though something similar to share ideas and resources. So while scrapbooking might not make you skinny…it can be a great part of your new lifestyle…in moderation like everything else. *wink*

  1. What a great idea! I have been telling myself for months now that I need to be healthier. Eat better and get some exercise going. I love this idea and may give it a go and maybe I will finally get my butt off the couch and actually do it! I think a little mini album or section in my scrapbook with pages documenting my progress is a great incentive.

  3. I have been toying with the idea of a weightloss scrapbook for a while. I think the thing that holds me back is that I do not have any successes to document yet, so maybe I need to scrap some motivation!

Plus if you are scrapbooking it’s hard to eat messy foods without the risk of messing up my layouts.
