Memory Logbook

You Asked For It

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

You got it.

Several of you using the print-your-own version of the Memory Logbook have requested various “extra” pages to help you better customize your book to fit your needs. Seemed like a great idea to me, so you can now find more than a dozen add-on pages right here in our on-site store. New pages include:

  • Blog Topics
  • Check It Out! ~ Artists, Music & Movies
  • Check It Out! ~ Website & Reading Material
  • Contact List
  • Fave Meals & Recipes
  • Fave Websites
  • Gift Tracker
  • Layout Notes
  • List & Sketch
  • Menu Planner
  • Playlist
  • Profile Tracker
  • Reading Log

The above pages are available for just 50 cents each … or you can get the entire set all at once for just $5, a savings of $1.50 off the total individual price.

I’ve even created a little freebie pack with three basic pages you can customize however you might like. You can find them in the store along with the others … or you are welcome to download them right here, if you’d prefer. Just click on the image below to start the download.

Memory Logbook Basic Add-Ons (FREE!)

If you’re looking for a special page that isn’t here, feel free to add your request to our forum thread started just for this purpose. It just might show up in our store someday…

Also new this month …

If you are a Kindle user, you may also be interested in another new item now available through Amazon’s Kindle Store.

A special edition of Real Life Scrapbooking Weekly Challenges is now available for the Kindle. It contains all of the challenges and questionnaires of the print & downloadable editions. The only pages left out of the Kindle edition are the Story List and Page Planner sketch pages, as they would be rather useless without the ability to easily write on them.

Of course, you can also subscribe to our daily blog posts on your Kindle for just 99 cents a month, with a free two-week trial subscription to get you started.

Don’t own a Kindle? You might want to check out a couple new options offered through Amazon, including the ability to download & read Kindle books on your PC or iPhone.

THIS is How She Does It!

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

While cruising some of my favorite neighboring forums recently, I came upon a very interesting thread highlighting how one particular scrapbooker was using her Memory Logbook in a very creative way. So I asked her to share with us just what she’s doing …

When I was a teenager (back in the 80s), I liked to carry a small calendar in my purse and in it, I would keep track of not just the things I HAD to do, but also things I had DONE. I didn’t need a planner, I didn’t even have a job, but I really liked to keep track of birthdays and events and I also started making notes about places I had gone and who I had gone with. (There was quite a quick rotation of boyfriends in that thing, ah-hem!) I decorated it with stickers and photos and magazine cut-outs and even some colored paper clips, just for fun.

Thanks to Kristin and Log Your Memory, I now have the ability to do the exact same kind of memory-keeping, on a grander scale. I use my book to jot down To-Do lists and silly things my toddler does and says. My book already has an amazing amount of information in it after only 10 days. When I find an interesting ad in my paper or print out something I find online, now I have a place to put those items.

Click on image for close-up view

What is really amazing to me is how little time making these entries takes. I usually just sit down with my Memory Log at bedtime and fill in some thoughts and activities from the day. When I upload and review the photos I’ve taken every couple of days, I quickly print out a few on my photo printer and just add them onto my pages.

By the end of the year, I will have a time capsule of my family’s daily life in 2010.

Time to Put Pen to Paper

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Now that we’re a few days into 2010 and hopefully everyone has had a chance to spend a little time with your Memory Logbook, it’s time to get serious about logging those “real life” memories!

First Things First …

If you own the Memory Logbook 2010, a monthly version of the Memory Logbook or Real Life Scrapbooking Weekly Challenges 2010, be sure you have registered for the Log Your Memory Book Club so you can take part in all of the fun activities I’m about to share!

book-stack-sm

If you were among the many who has already spent a month logging with the December 2009 version of the Logbook, I’d love for you to share what you’ve learned so far through this forum thread. And if this is your first time logging, be sure to check out that thread yourself to see what they have to say!

Get Started with These Worksheets

The time has come to start putting your new Logbook to good use. Hopefully you’ve already begun jotting down notes, filling in important dates, perhaps sketched a layout idea or two, or even completed a few questionnaires. Of particular interest this week are several worksheets found near the beginning of your book.

The Today’s Prices worksheet is a fun way to document what a handful of everyday items cost in your part of the world at this time in history.

The Annual Check-Up worksheet is there to create a baseline for your scrapbooking year, which will be very interesting to look back upon in January 2011.

Once you finish the above two pages, be sure to share them in our special Book Club forum … not only will you inspire others to do the same, but you’ll earn points through our new Real Deal rewards program (see It’s the Real Deal below).

Now is also the perfect time to complete your first Monthly Check-Up, which you’ll repeat at the beginning of each month throughout the entire year.

And don’t forget to fill in the Holiday Worksheet for New Year’s Day so you’ll have a permanent record of the day’s events. If you get inspired to create a layout about the day, great! And if not, you’ll have all of the information ready and waiting for you for later on.

This is also a great time to start using your Story List page. Spend a little time thinking about all of those memories and stories you would like to get scrapbooked “someday” and then jot them down on your Story List. As the year goes on and you think of others, add them to the list. And don’t forget to check off the ones that you scrap so you can see how much progress you’re making!

Kicking off the Logbook Weekly Challenges …

Now we’re getting to the real core of the Memory Logbook … the Weekly Challenges. Week #1 officially begins today and to help you get started, you can now find a forum thread focused exclusively on this week’s challenge topic. You’ll find another one each week in the Weekly Logbook Challenges 2010 section of the private Book Club forum. (Hint: If you’re having difficulty accessing those pages, you are either not a registered Book Club member or you have not logged in to the forum.)

2010 by Jenn Barrette

"2010" by Jenn Barrette

Don’t forget to check out this week’s album in the private Weekly Challenge Layout Gallery where you’ll find tons of inspiring layouts like the one above created by our talented Calendar Girls and fellow Book Club members!

It’s the Real Deal …

Everyone can use a little extra motivation, even when it’s something fun like scrapbooking. So today I’m excited to kick off a special reward program exclusively for Log Your Memory Book Club members who are using the Memory Logbook 2010 and taking part in the Weekly Challenges.

real-deal-logoThrough our Real Deal program, Book Club members will earn points each time you complete one of several “real life” scrapbooking activities related to the Memory Logbook. Points will be totaled each week, eventually earning you special discount coupons good for purchases of downloads from the Log Your Memory on-site store. The more points you earn, the higher the discount. The program will continue throughout the entire year, with a handful of special prizes awarded at the end of the year to our top point-earners.

Points will be earned each time participants complete the following activities:

  • Posting a completed layout in response to the Weekly Challenge prompts in the corresponding Weekly Challenge album.
  • Participating in Weekly Challenge discussion threads in the Book Club private forum.
  • Participating in other special discussion threads in the Book Club private forum.
  • Taking part in other designated Book Club activities throughout the year.

All point-earning activities will include information regarding Real Deal point values within their description. There are no deadlines for most Real Deal activities, though points will only be totaled & reward coupons emailed once per week. A running point total for each participant will be recorded in the Book Club Weekly Challenge forum once points start to accrue.

Rewards will be given as follows:

All reward coupons are non-transferable and will expire on 3/31/2011.

Later This Week …

  • A special “real life” scrapbooking guest post from our Calendar Girl of the Month ~ Heather Guenther: The Good, the Bad & the Adorable “Ugly.
  • Information & a special freebie download from our January Guest Designer!
  • Details on how to enter our 2010 Scrapbook Idea Yearbook contest.
  • Our weekly Story Board and Layout of the Week.

Get to Know Our Cover Girl

Monday, December 21st, 2009

A week ago, I announced Kim Winter as the winner that you – our Log Your Memory community – selected as our first Cover Girl! Since you obviously love her work, I thought you might also like to get to know her a little better. Read on to find out who this special lady is and what inspired her winning design …

Kim Winter (KimWin)

Kim Winter (KimWin)

Name: Kim Winter

Username: KimWin

Location: San Antonio, TX

Please tell us a little about yourself … your family, your background… I am married to a wonderful man, Gerry. I have three children, Kelsey (19), Holly (18) and Tim (14). I will also be a grandmother around April 11. I teach resource English at an inner city high school in San Antonio. I just finished my master’s degree in Autism last year.

How long have you been a scrapbooker & how did you first get started? I started scrapbooking when I was in high school, but they didn’t have the awesome papers or programs that there is now. I remember coloring pages in my daughters’ baby books because I couldn’t find what I wanted.

Are you a digital, paper or hybrid scrapper? What do you like most about this method? I love paper scrapping; just looking at the papers is fun for me. I have just begun to try digital scrapbooking. When I got my laptop I was able to get Photoshop.  So, now I am learning all about digital.

What fills your time when you are NOT scrapbooking? If I am not scrapping, you can find me reading the latest best seller or writing short stories. I also crochet and sew.

Winning Logbook Cover Design by Kim Winter

Winning Logbook Cover Design by Kim Winter

What inspired your winning Logbook cover design? I love the colors and flash of the papers. I normally use purples for my personal stuff, so I was really experimenting with the blue and orange. My favorite element on the layout was the Tim Holtz film ribbon. It looks like old film strips!

How did you go about creating your cover It started out with playing with the scraps from other layouts. Most of my stuff is designed that way.

What do you like most about your completed cover design? I love the colors. I carry my logbook with me to school, and even my students complement the cover.

What is your best tip for fellow scrapbookers seeking to create their own Logbook cover? Play with it and make sure it is something you will like. You will be looking at this cover for a while! ;)

Anything else you’d like to add? Always go for it, I almost didn’t enter the contest. I didn’t think my layout was that great until my students told me they loved it.

Ready, set, LOG!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The time has finally come when we can actually use our Memory Logbooks! Even though it is technically still November, the December 2009 edition of the Memory Logbook kicks off today with its first official Weekly Challenge : “How do you relax?” As will be the case every week, the book also offers several variations on this prompt to ensure there’s something that will suit scrapbookers and memory keepers of all backgrounds and lifestyles. If you haven’t purchased a Logbook, there’s still time to get in on this month’s fun, especially if you choose to download and print your own book. Check out your options in our on-site store HERE.

(If you’re interesting in purchasing print copies of our books, be sure to check out the special one day only “Cyber Monday” sale going on today at Lulu.com. Use coupon code: CYBERBOOKS and get 25% off your purchase in our Lulu Bookstore. Offer ends at 11:59 p.m. tonight (GMT).)

Because this is a brand new product, even I haven’t given this tool a true test run yet. So this month, I’ll be right along there beside you figuring out how best to incorporate my memory logging into my daily routine. To help everyone along, today I will point out the main features of your Memory Logbook, as well as offer a few ideas for putting it to use in your life. Feel free to share your own ideas through a comment following this post!

DEC09-logbook-3

Monthly At-A-Glance Calendar This two-page spread includes room to jot down appointments, short anecdotal comments, special events, birthdays, etc. and already includes standard US holidays. Also featured is a list of several suggested photos you might want to get related to the current month, such as “stacks of catalogs” or “delivering holiday goodies.” When I work up the nerve to actually write in my book, I will be entering “My 40th Birthday” on the 29th… LOL.

Daily Calendar Pages With about a third of a page broken into half-hour increments from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for every day of the month, you could use this feature to track your schedule, appointments and the like. But these pages also offer a convenient slot to jot down the “stuff” that makes up your every day experience, such as the unusually warm afternoon temperatures on Tuesday, the funny thing your little one said on Thursday morning or that great new dish you tried at your favorite restaurant on Friday night. There’s additional room below in the “Real Life” section to jot down more detailed stories, ideas or other information you’d like to save for later. This could also be a great place to record your December Daily project ideas, if that’s something you are doing this year.

Weekly Challenge & Page Planner This is the real heart of the Memory Logbook, as it begins each week with a focus on a particular area of your “real” life suitable for scrapbooking. There’s room below the questions to jot down your thoughts and ideas related to the challenge, as well as a full page of boxes to the left in which to sketch layout ideas. If you feel inspired and have time to scrapbook right away, this will get those creative juices flowing. And if you don’t get to scrap right away, your ideas will be right there waiting for you when you do find the time – plus you can always go back and add notes, sketches or other ideas to your Logbook as they come to you. Personally, I tend to be much more productive and happier with my pages when I am really inspired by and interested in the topic. That might not be during the week each particular prompt is scheduled. So instead, I will flip through and jot ideas throughout the entire book when they come to me and then scrap them when it feels right.

Stress by aly321

"Stress" by aly321

On several of the Weekly Challenge pages, there is also an actual scrapbook page that fits the theme. You can find full-size, full-color versions of these layouts in our private Logbook Sample Layout Gallery, as well as tons of inspiring pages like the one above created by the Log Your Memory Calendar Girls. (This gallery is accessible by Book Club members only. The purchase of any Memory Logbook qualifies you for membership). When you do scrapbook a page in response to a particular Weekly Challenge, be sure to post it to that week’s album in our Logbook Layout Gallery. We’d love to see your pages and are sure to be inspired even further by your sharing. The private Book Club forum is also available for use by members, so if you feel inspired to start a topic, ask a question, seek input or share ideas related to using the Memory Logbook, please feel free to do so.

Monthly Check-Up, Holiday, Celebration & Birthday Worksheets These are all open-ended questionnaires found near the end of each month intended to help you get information about these particular events down on paper. I’ll touch on these more when the opportunity arises, but for now you may want to just take a peek so you’ll know what’s included.

DEC09-logbook-2

Now what do I DO with this? My Logbook is sitting right out on my desk where I will see it every time I walk into my home office, which is about a million times a day! I am going to start first by using my print-your-own version with its incorporated pocket pages so I can slip Christmas programs, wish lists and other goodies into the pockets. I will use it to write down my daily schedule, as well as my anecdotal notes, with a goal of taking at least 5 minutes before I go to bed every night to think about my day and write down anything that comes to mind that I may have missed earlier. Because I don’t have a lot of time to scrapbook right now, I’m not sure I’ll actually DO any of the challenge layouts right away. But I will definitely be thinking about the questions and writing down my ideas so that when the opportunity arises, I’ll be ready.

What I tend to find is that by writing these things down, my creative juices really get flowing, the ideas start to multiply and pretty soon I will just find a way to get the page scrapped, busy or not. And that works for me, with the end result being that my memories are getting recorded and my scrapbooks are getting done. That system may not work for you … but I’m confident if you are willing to do a little trial & error, you will find the one that will. And we’ll all be here cheering you on along the way… :)

To celebrate the holidays and as a special thank you to all of my new Log Your Memory friends, I put together a little freebie Gift Pack for you to download and add to your December Logbook.  This packet includes several handy lists & planning pages to help you get through this busy holiday month, all designed in the same style as the Logbook. If you don’t own a Logbook, you may still find these pages useful … and you can print as few or as many as you need for your own holiday planning. You can find this free Gift Pack HERE in our on-site store.

Just one last reminder … tonight at midnight is the deadline for our Cover Girl contest! Be sure to check out the entry rules in this post and get your cover submitted today to be included in the fun!

Hello Monday

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

After all of the excitement of last week and our Grand Opening SPOOKtacular, it seems that Monday morning has come a bit more quickly than usual. This particular Monday is both an ending and a beginning in more ways than one, so I thought I’d share a few thoughts today about each…

monday-nov

Ending …

In addition to the end of October and our Grand Opening festivities, we are also at the end of another significant event around Log Your Memory – our call for applications for our 2010 Creative Team. Though we do accept applications year-round for this opportunity, we will soon be choosing those individuals who will round out our team for the coming year. Several team members will be chosen and asked to commit to slightly more than a one-year term, beginning in mid-November and continuing through the end of 2010. Future applicants will be added to a “waiting list” of sorts, including individuals we will consider should an opening become available on the team prior to the end of the calendar year.

Today is the deadline for this current CT call, so if you’ve been thinking about putting in an application, please do so before midnight tonight. You can find out more about the opportunity and expectations, as well as how to apply, HERE.

Beginning …

Believe it or not, we are already at the beginning of November. Today is also the first day of our first online workshop – the Gift of the Year:2010 scrapbooking calendar class. Though we have officially already started, it is not too late to join the group. You can find out more about the class, as well as how to register, HERE. This workshop can be highly interactive, if you choose it to be, and is a great way to get to know your fellow Log Your Memory community members while creating a gift that will very likely be the hit of the holidays for someone you love. I hope you’ll consider joining us …

Also new… the Print-It-Yourself downloadable version of the Memory Logbook is now available directly through the Log Your Memory Web site! You can now order the same download previously available only through our Lulu.com Bookstore right here on our site. Click HERE for details.

We are also excited to announce an opportunity to take a peek at the Scrapbooker’s All-In-One Memory Logbook at the Creating Keepsakes Convention in Seattle next weekend. Thanks to our new friends at Dixie Pieces, a copy of the coil-bound version of our book will be on display in their booth at the Vendor Faire, which is set for the morning of Friday, November 6th through Saturday, November 7th. If you happen to be in the area, please stop by and check it out! And be sure to tell them Kristin sent you!!

tip-sheet-customlog

The Print-It-Yourself downloadable eBook version of the Scrapbooker’s All-In-One Memory Logbook is a great format for those who like to tweak things around to fit their lifestyle. There are several ways you can customize your book. Here are a few tips & suggestions to get you started…

DSC08237

Printing Your Book

The downloadable Memory Logbook is intended for printing, as the file is not easily editable using your average software. However, if you have access to software that allows you to edit PDF files, you could fairly easily add family dates and other notes to your Logbook pages prior to printing.

There are basically two options for printing your book:

1.     Print it at home using your own inkjet or laser printer. If you have a printer that does double-sided pages, this will be a snap. If not, it may take a little experimentation to get it all printed correctly. Generally, you’ll want to print all of the odd pages first, then flip over the stack and put it back in the printer. Take care to ensure you have it positioned correctly so your next printout will be correctly oriented and on the right side. Next print the even pages, but set your printer to do this in the reverse order. Check to be sure everything is matching up before allowing the entire 388-page document to go through the printer!

2.     Burn the downloaded file onto a CD-ROM or DVD and take it to your local printer. Friendly Reminder: This is a copyrighted item and it is illegal to make copies of the disc or of the document for anyone other than yourself and your household.

DSC08244

Suggested Materials

  • 3-ring binder – At least 2 inches wide, larger if you plan to add a lot of extra “stuff” to your book. The kind with a transparent outside sleeve will allow you to customize the outside of your book.
  • 3-hole punch
  • 12 untabbed double-pocket dividers, such as the type shown in the above photo
  • Label-maker & label tape (or simply write the labels on the folders directly with a permanent fine-tip pen)
  • 3 sheets of white or lightly colored cardstock (8.5×11-inch)
  • 2-3 sheets of black cardstock (8.5×11-inch)
  • Rotary paper cutter
  • Anything else you’d like to add, such as transparent page sleeves, photo pocket pages, manila envelopes for holding memorabilia or other documents, 3-hole punched pencil bag for holding supplies, etc.

Assembling Your Logbook

1.     Carefully punch holes through all pages of the book using the 3-hole punch.

DSC08247

2.     If you are using a label maker, create a label for each of the 12 months of the year.

3.     Affix the labels to the lower right-hand corner of each of the 12 pocket folders.

4.     Insert the 12 pocket folders between each of the 12 months in the Logbook. The easiest place to do this is to insert the pocket page between the Monthly Check-up page and the Holiday Worksheet, as shown above. For example, place the January pocket page between pages 18 and 19; February’s pocket page between pages 46 and 47; and so on.

By placing the pocket pages in this manner, you will be able to identify each month’s label on the side, then flip it open and have that month’s at-a-glance pages displayed  immediately prior to the pocket page, as shown above. However, if another method works better for you, than by all means … do it! Make this work for YOU!

5.    Create your outside cover using the white cardstock or other materials of your choice. You could create something from scratch (scrapbook-style, perhaps?) or if you prefer, download this freebie and print out the front and back cover sheets, as well as the spine insert, on the white cardstock.

7.     Place a sheet of black cardstock behind your finished cover sheet, adjusting it so that the two sheets combined are wide enough to almost completely fill the width of the transparent front sleeve of the binder. Slip the pages into the sleeve. Repeat for the back of the binder.

8.     Using the paper cutter, cut a piece of black cardstock vertically so that it is about 1/2-inch narrower than the spine of your binder and 11 inches long. Trim the printed spine insert so that it is about 1/2-inch narrower than the black spine piece. Layer the two pieces together so there is a black border on each side of the printed spine insert and slip into the binder (see above). If this is difficult to do, it sometimes helps to open the binder up extra wide to allow the plastic sleeve to buckle a bit and make it easier to slide in the cardstock.

9.     Add whatever other goodies you’d like to the binder … and you’re done. Now you’re all set to put your Memory Logbook to good use!
