You know the old saying, “A picture is worth 1,000 words.” I don’t know if that always holds true. But, as I was thinking about the challenge for this week, I thought that it really is true a lot of the time.
When I thought about taking a “snapshot” of my everyday life, I knew it had to revolve around my kids, since I’m a stay-at-home-mom and my everyday life is full of them. But, my life would probably seem pretty boring or mundane to most people. And, then I realized, that I hardly ever look around and think, “I’m bored.”
My life, though routine, is kind of crazy – full of the ups and downs that kids bring with them. As I started looking through my photos to find ones that I thought represented my life the best, I realized that so many of the pictures really are worth 1,000 words.
The picture of my oldest son with his goofy face may just look like a silly photo to anyone else. But, to me, it reminds me of the happy, busy, funny kid that he is. It reminds me of how much my life has sped up since he was born. It reminds me of the hundreds of silly faces he has pulled in the past when I have pulled out my camera to take a photo of him. It reminds me to enjoy him just the way he is right now, because he won’t be this way for long.
When I look at the photo of my second son throwing his head back in laughter, I think of the fact that he is actually quite shy and self-conscious. Not very many people have been able to see him just let go and laugh like this. These kinds of moments are reserved for those of us that are closest to him. And, when he feels comfortable and really lets down his guard, his laugh lights up a room and makes everyone happier.
And then there’s the baby girl. Seeing her sweet smile reminds me of how much our life has changed since she came along – a true ray of sunshine in our family. Every day, every night, every meal, and every family get-together has been more fun and more sweet since she joined our fold. She brings a smile to my face every single day.
But, it’s not all sunshine, rainbows, and love. There’s the cooking and the cleaning too. I have such a hard time keeping up with the laundry, and figuring out what to feed my family while taking into account everyone’s likes and dislikes can be a real challenge. But, even those photos help me remember all the time I spend everyday taking care of the people I love the most and that there is great satisfaction to be had in providing for their physical needs in such a personal way.
So, take the challenge this week to capture a snapshot of your everyday life. To everyone else, it make look simple and boring. But to you, it will bring back memories and thoughts about 1,000 things that are worth remembering.
