Behind the Scenes with Crystal Livesay: Part II

Today we continue with the second half of our Q&A interview with December Guest Designer Crystal Livesay. If you missed the first part, you can still find it here.

December Guest Designer Crystal LivesayWhat is your biggest challenge as a scrapbook product designer? For me it’s time management. Keeping a balance and trying to stay ahead of the game without neglecting other responsibilities.

What has been the biggest reward or most fulfilling aspect of being a scrapbook product designer? I looooove when I hear from someone and they tell me they were able to get their stories down because of my templates or prompts. Or that they learned something new about someone they loved when they dug a little deeper. It’s an amazing blessing to me to be able to be part of something so special in people’s lives.

Where do you get your product ideas? Who & what inspires you? Honestly I am not sure. I just try to go with what works for me and my own scrap style. I don’t make things that I wouldn’t use myself.

How long does it typically take you to design a full kit from concept to delivery? What is your process? For templates it just takes me a few hours. I start with my theme and then usually use my own pages as guides. It’s not that hard once I get going.

What has been your most popular product? {grow with love} the kids edition is my best seller by a wide margin.

What is your favorite kit and why? My favorite is {grow with love} the marriage edition. It was born from a very special place in my heart and was meant to be a private thing between my friend Sara and I and then we decided others might be touched or moved by it as well. So we found a way to open it up to the community and I am so grateful we did.

How do you incorporate “real life” scrapbooking into your personal & professional scrapbooking & design work? For me, I don’t want people living to scrap. I just want people to get their memories and stories recorded so I encourage people to go out and live and do and act with their families and then when they want to get those stories down quickly they can come to me for templates to help them do that.

What fills your time when you are NOT scrapbooking? Kids! They take up sooooo much of my time and my heart it’s hard to do much else. Like I said earlier though…at night, you can usually find me with a book in my hand!

What advice do you have for fellow scrapbookers interested in pursuing the scrapbook product design field? If you are interested in designing then do something that is very you. Don’t try to copy others that are successful. Be unique and original and do what you would use yourself and that sets you apart, not that makes you blend in. The market is huge so the only way to be successful is by bringing something new to the table. And mostly… Have fun!! If it’s not fun, it’s not worth it in my opinion!

Anything else you’d like to add? I also want to say that I am so grateful to the sweet fans and friends I have in this community. There are so many of you who have touched me with your pages and with your emails and messages and I am so grateful to all of you. You all remind me what there is to love about digital scrapping!
