Do you send an annual Christmas card? How about a family newsletter? Perhaps you do both … or neither. It seems everyone has a different approach (and a different opinion) when it comes to sending holiday greetings.
My personal choice, which has been true for as long as I’ve been a parent, has been to send some kind of year-end summary to our friends and family members along with a more traditional card. I’m not much of a letter-writer and oftentimes, this is the only time many of these people hear much from us during the year.
Some years this has been a fairly straightforward letter, but being the scrapbooking/creative-type, most of the time this letter becomes a much more elaborate endeavor. (Of course, part of the need for creativity stems from the fact that I also tend to be the wordy type, so it’s a challenge to fit everything on one page!!)
During my time as a newspaper reporter, our family letter took the form of, you guessed it, the front page of a newspaper. Another year I wrote the entire letter through the eyes of one of my kids.
In 2007, our letter was fairly traditional looking. I think I must have been a bit time-crunched that season…
The next year, I was in full scrapbooking mode. Can you tell?
And then last year it looked like this…
I haven’t decided yet how I want to do our letter this year, so I spent a little time poking around the galleries to see if anyone else had shared their Christmas letters.
I love that scrapbookers can extend their hobby beyond their albums, like this gal did with her family’s letter…
And I found our very own Calendar Girl Rebecca’s Kuchenbecker’s approach very clever as well. She did her holiday card/letter like this…
But then she made a second version to go in her scrapbook album…
I love that idea! What better way to capture a year’s worth of memories than saving and/or re-purposing our family newsletters?
How about you? What’s your approach to holiday greetings? Just for fun, click on the button below that best describes what you do … and then if you’d like, I’d love for you to share a few thoughts or a link to a favorite card or letter through the comment section below!!
