Where do I find inspiration? Let me show you …

I was on a bit of a mission yesterday morning.

With about an hour to go before I had to be back at the bus stop to pick up my 4-year-old from preschool, I grabbed my toddler, my cell phone (in case of emergency) and my camera and headed out the door.

I didn’t even grab a jacket (mistake #1) or change into more reasonable shoes (mistake #2). I was on a mission and I was afraid if I slowed down to think about it too much, I’d talk myself out of the whole thing.

I had two things on my mind … the first, was getting a little fresh air and some exercise, both of which I’ve been sorely lacking lately. But more pressing – and the part which actually motivated me to get moving – was to stir up that part of my brain that feeds me ideas.

You see, I’m one of those people that tends to look for – and as a result SEE – inspiration everywhere. I can’t pick up a newspaper without redesigning the front page in my mind. I can’t look at a store window without picking out a cool color combination or noting what I like and don’t like. I rarely see a quote or phrase without testing in my mind to see if it would be a cool scrapbook page title or appropriate addition to my mental list of favorites. I rarely read a menu without noticing the font combinations (and picking out the spelling errors).

When I want to be inspired, I tend to look for it in my “real” world. And going for a walk downtown is one of my most effective ways of getting that process started.

We’ll call it an Inspiration Walk … and I’d love for you to join me…

Inspiration Photo Walk

Miss Danica. My daily companion and source of many giggles. As we walked, we started chatting back and forth … me saying something silly or making a strange noise and her repeating it. Totally made me think of that commercial where you see the adult babbling on like a crazy person for several seconds before the camera reveals the little person below. I could totally recreate that commercial in the form of a scrapbook page. Maybe someday…
Inspiration Photo Walk

The view on our block as we headed from our house toward downtown. Our town is very hilly, so we have some interesting vantage points where we live. The tower nearest us is the local Catholic church. The one in the distance is the clock at the courthouse. More on that a bit later…
Inspiration Photo Walk

Many of our town’s buildings have the remnants of the old signs painted on their sides. This one made me think of a couple scrapbooking ideas … using that “Hi-life” logo somehow or possibly the slogan. Nothing real concrete… we’re just getting started on this journey …
Inspiration Photo Walk

It’s Homecoming Week and that means lots of activity for my kids, particularly my oldest. I can see myself incorporating this sign along with photos I may manage to take later in the week … parade, Spirit Week activities, the band …
Inspiration Photo Walk

Yep, we live in the self-proclaimed “Chokecherry Capital” of the world. I’ve actually scrapped a couple pages (here’s one) about my chokecherry jelly-making adventures in the past, but have never really documented the other events that occur in our town during the annual Chokecherry Festival. Note to self … do that sometime.

Loved, loved, loved the book. My hubby & I went to the movie last Friday night. It was good, though the book was better … I think I probably enjoyed the movie more than Jacques … but even better was getting out of the house without kids in tow for a few hours. I scrap a lot of the kid stuff… not so much about “us.” Hmmm….
Inspiration Photo Walk

An easy way to let “real life” document the essentials … date, time, temp. See why I should have grabbed a jacket?
Inspiration Photo Walk

So this is more of a personally inspiring note. I think this is really cute. I don’t own anything like this right now but I can see myself wearing this and feeling pretty okay about it. Might just have to go back and get it for myself. Maybe that will help motivate me to continue these little jaunts outside in the fresh air???

I’ve actually used an image of this menu before as part of an Inspired by Real Life challenge. This is a menu in the window of a cute little ice cream shop in town that my dad loves to take the kids to when he’s here. It’s also a place where we’ve taken a few folks because of the fun atmosphere. Unfortunately, it is also now closed … need to scrap about those things before we forget all about it…

I love quotes, I love typography and I adore these signs, so much in fact that my family bought two of them for me for last Mother’s Day. I’ve been meaning to work the signs and/or the messages they contain into a scrapbook page but haven’t done it yet. Just another reminder to do that…
Inspiration Photo Walk

I took myself to dinner the other night at this cute little restaurant. Not something I do very often, especially not alone, but I needed a break and that’s what I did. I LOVED the experience. I sat right there in the left window, ate a huge pile of linguine with marinara & cheese breadsticks, brainstormed a really cool new product launch (soon!!) and reveled in the fact that I was just me doing something I really enjoyed. Note to self: Do this more often. And scrap about it. 🙂
Inspiration Photo Walk

Ack. Reminder that this was a service I used to provide in one of my earlier business ventures. Didn’t enjoy it very much but learned a lot … and have never scrapped about it. This walk is turning into a bit of a scrapping To Do list.
Inspiration Photo Walk

Another topic for a someday scrapbook page… this is where I used to work, where I met my husband and where he is now “the boss.” Lots of memories tied into this place, both past and present.
Inspiration Photo Walk

A closer view of that courthouse clock tower.
Inspiration Photo Walk

Also at the courthouse. This is actually where my husband proposed to me during our walk home from seeing a movie just down the street. A few funny things happened during this proposal, which I definitely want to capture before my memory takes a permanent vacation. Yes… another note to self because no, I have not scrapped this yet.
Inspiration Photo Walk

Our town just had the opportunity to take advantage of some great federal funding to help build a new junior high to replace the one you see below … and voted AGAINST the bond that would have allowed it to happen. As you may have guessed, I was not among the naysayers and voted in support of the proposal. It wasn’t enough. I think stuff like this also deserves a place in our memory keeping…
Inspiration Photo Walk

Just thought you might want to see a broader view of our little town… this was taken from the south end of Main Street… we’ve walked all the way up the left side of this photo so far. Now we’re turning around and heading back home…
Inspiration Photo Walk

Another reminder it is Spirit Week, as displayed in a local store window. They did such a nice job arranging this for us … maybe I’ll just use this photo instead of recreating it myself, eh?
Inspiration Photo Walk

Eye candy. I spotted these in a local thrift/antique type shop. For some reason, I’m feeling a rather strong urge to find some excuse to make a home for that cute typewriter in my office… should have checked the price. Must go back. 🙂 Also a good reminder how much I like that color … maybe I’ll work that into a Danica layout soon…
Inspiration Photo Walk

Always fun to document current gasoline prices, considering how much they’ve gone up and down the last few years… This one appears to be “falling” as we speak … LOL.
Inspiration Photo Walk

And yes, an excuse to ponder… what IS my favorite milkshake flavor??
Inspiration Photo Walk

And back home again! This is our little corner of town … literally. We’re right on the corner in the block between Main Street and one of our three local elementary schools, which is behind this scene. Love how green it is this year … normally by now everything has started to turn brown but it’s been a weird year that way.
Inspiration Photo Walk

Thanks for joining me on my little walk. I don’t know about you, but I now have a bunch of stuff to add to my scrapping To Do list, as well as some new ideas percolating in the back of my mind…

So now it’s your turn. Where do you – or could you – look for inspiration in YOUR real life?

Help us celebrate Log Your Memory’s First Anniversary by making a difference in a real family’s everyday life! Details in this post.

Oh my, you live in Lewistown! I grew up in Conrad & my brother still lives there. Thais so much for this post. It’s inspired me to ask my brother & sister-in-law to take some photos of my hometown, especially the old buildings. A page about my hometown is now high on my scrapbooking list!

I love your walk of inspiration. I would like to walk around our downtown and see how much it inspires me. Perhaps this week….

  5. I totally agree with you – there is inspiration everywhere! My husband and I took a trip to Hell, Michigan over the summer and I took photos of signs, trees and buildings along the way and ended up with several scrapbooking ideas (that I still need to bring to fruition). I loved reading the stories behind the photos. Thanks for the walk!

  6. Loved taking the walk with you and your little companion. I have been meaning to do this for years, but we don’t live in a downtown area so there isn’t too much to see while walking…maybe I’ll have to do a driving photo inspiration sometime. Thanks for all the eye candy and for your perspective on your town. Really awesome!
