Summer Project 2010: Week #3

My summer project continues with step #3 …

Week #3: Identifying what we’ve got & devising a plan.

After sorting my son’s kindergarten year stuff and getting a pretty good idea of the materials, both physical and digital, I’ll be working with, it was time to create a more concrete plan of just how I wanted to pull everything together into an album.

I’ve actually been forming a vision of the finished product from Day One … I decided early on that I wanted to divide the album into sections, one section per school year. I also have had to face the reality that if I were to attempt to create actual full-fledged layouts for everything I want to save, this project is never going to get done. I can live with that, though, because I happen to love the concept of combination albums, so that’s what this is going to be.

A combination album is just like it sounds … scrapbook layouts combined with more traditional photo album-type pocket pages. They are becoming increasingly popular … and in my mind, that’s wonderful because it means product designers are coming out with all kinds of new products these days that work well in these albums.

So my next decision was shaped largely by the products available. One of my favorite product suppliers is We R Memory Keepers because of their ever-growing line of 12×12 photo sleeves. They have all kinds of neat sizes and configurations for their pockets now … perfect for the assortment of school memorabilia I plan to include in this album. So though I had initially toyed with the idea of doing an 8.5×11-inch album (because that’s the size of a lot of the awards & papers that will go in it), I quickly settled on a 3-ring 12×12 album because of the availability of so many pocket page options.

Since I live in the middle of nowhere, online ordering was my obvious choice. Now that I’ve done some sorting of our memorabilia and have a pretty good idea of the different types of items I’ll need spaces for, I placed an order for several different types of pages, including the ones you see below. Click on each one for more details on that particular product.

An assortment of pocket sleeves with all different sizes and orientations. I like getting this combo pack because it lets me try out the different pages to see which styles I end up using most often.

The following are several of the newer pages available. I have a feeling I’ll be finding all kinds of uses for these pages, particularly the first one, even after this project is complete!

This may seem like a lot, but keep in mind … I plan to use the same format for the entire 12-year album, so by ordering a bunch at once, I’m planning ahead for lots of different options (and saving on shipping).

I also picked out an album … navy blue to go along with my son’s blue eyes. (Just a note … the actual album turned out to be a very dark navy blue … almost black. Just something to be aware of if you consider ordering the same one.)

The best part of all this shopping? Answering the door when the Fed Ex guy came knocking … I just LOVE getting scrapping goodies delivered to my doorstep!

Next week: Creating a list of actual layouts to be scrapped.
