Ready, set, LOG!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The time has finally come when we can actually use our Memory Logbooks! Even though it is technically still November, the December 2009 edition of the Memory Logbook kicks off today with its first official Weekly Challenge : “How do you relax?” As will be the case every week, the book also offers several variations on this prompt to ensure there’s something that will suit scrapbookers and memory keepers of all backgrounds and lifestyles. If you haven’t purchased a Logbook, there’s still time to get in on this month’s fun, especially if you choose to download and print your own book. Check out your options in our on-site store HERE.

(If you’re interesting in purchasing print copies of our books, be sure to check out the special one day only “Cyber Monday” sale going on today at Lulu.com. Use coupon code: CYBERBOOKS and get 25% off your purchase in our Lulu Bookstore. Offer ends at 11:59 p.m. tonight (GMT).)

Because this is a brand new product, even I haven’t given this tool a true test run yet. So this month, I’ll be right along there beside you figuring out how best to incorporate my memory logging into my daily routine. To help everyone along, today I will point out the main features of your Memory Logbook, as well as offer a few ideas for putting it to use in your life. Feel free to share your own ideas through a comment following this post!

DEC09-logbook-3

Monthly At-A-Glance Calendar This two-page spread includes room to jot down appointments, short anecdotal comments, special events, birthdays, etc. and already includes standard US holidays. Also featured is a list of several suggested photos you might want to get related to the current month, such as “stacks of catalogs” or “delivering holiday goodies.” When I work up the nerve to actually write in my book, I will be entering “My 40th Birthday” on the 29th… LOL.

Daily Calendar Pages With about a third of a page broken into half-hour increments from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for every day of the month, you could use this feature to track your schedule, appointments and the like. But these pages also offer a convenient slot to jot down the “stuff” that makes up your every day experience, such as the unusually warm afternoon temperatures on Tuesday, the funny thing your little one said on Thursday morning or that great new dish you tried at your favorite restaurant on Friday night. There’s additional room below in the “Real Life” section to jot down more detailed stories, ideas or other information you’d like to save for later. This could also be a great place to record your December Daily project ideas, if that’s something you are doing this year.

Weekly Challenge & Page Planner This is the real heart of the Memory Logbook, as it begins each week with a focus on a particular area of your “real” life suitable for scrapbooking. There’s room below the questions to jot down your thoughts and ideas related to the challenge, as well as a full page of boxes to the left in which to sketch layout ideas. If you feel inspired and have time to scrapbook right away, this will get those creative juices flowing. And if you don’t get to scrap right away, your ideas will be right there waiting for you when you do find the time – plus you can always go back and add notes, sketches or other ideas to your Logbook as they come to you. Personally, I tend to be much more productive and happier with my pages when I am really inspired by and interested in the topic. That might not be during the week each particular prompt is scheduled. So instead, I will flip through and jot ideas throughout the entire book when they come to me and then scrap them when it feels right.

Stress by aly321

"Stress" by aly321

On several of the Weekly Challenge pages, there is also an actual scrapbook page that fits the theme. You can find full-size, full-color versions of these layouts in our private Logbook Sample Layout Gallery, as well as tons of inspiring pages like the one above created by the Log Your Memory Calendar Girls. (This gallery is accessible by Book Club members only. The purchase of any Memory Logbook qualifies you for membership). When you do scrapbook a page in response to a particular Weekly Challenge, be sure to post it to that week’s album in our Logbook Layout Gallery. We’d love to see your pages and are sure to be inspired even further by your sharing. The private Book Club forum is also available for use by members, so if you feel inspired to start a topic, ask a question, seek input or share ideas related to using the Memory Logbook, please feel free to do so.

Monthly Check-Up, Holiday, Celebration & Birthday Worksheets These are all open-ended questionnaires found near the end of each month intended to help you get information about these particular events down on paper. I’ll touch on these more when the opportunity arises, but for now you may want to just take a peek so you’ll know what’s included.

DEC09-logbook-2

Now what do I DO with this? My Logbook is sitting right out on my desk where I will see it every time I walk into my home office, which is about a million times a day! I am going to start first by using my print-your-own version with its incorporated pocket pages so I can slip Christmas programs, wish lists and other goodies into the pockets. I will use it to write down my daily schedule, as well as my anecdotal notes, with a goal of taking at least 5 minutes before I go to bed every night to think about my day and write down anything that comes to mind that I may have missed earlier. Because I don’t have a lot of time to scrapbook right now, I’m not sure I’ll actually DO any of the challenge layouts right away. But I will definitely be thinking about the questions and writing down my ideas so that when the opportunity arises, I’ll be ready.

What I tend to find is that by writing these things down, my creative juices really get flowing, the ideas start to multiply and pretty soon I will just find a way to get the page scrapped, busy or not. And that works for me, with the end result being that my memories are getting recorded and my scrapbooks are getting done. That system may not work for you … but I’m confident if you are willing to do a little trial & error, you will find the one that will. And we’ll all be here cheering you on along the way… :)

Sarah has been an active member here at Log Your Memory nearly from our launch and just recently even started contributing some of her templates and other design work as freebies for our membership. Please tell us a little about yourself … your family, your pets,  your backgroundI’m a wife and mum of two boys aged 4 and 5 months. I’m a teacher in the early years when not on maternity leave. We have two dogs. I live a pretty suburban life!

How long have you been a scrapbooker & how did you first get started? I first started paper scrapping some time ago. Teachers love anything to do with stationery. I loved all the wiggly scissors. I found digi when I started to put text on my photos to add interest to layouts. I thought I invented digi scrapping…

How has your scrapbooking changed since that time? When I started I was into blending and creating magazine-type layouts. Then I discovered the digi scrap community and became all about products- how many elements can I put on one page?! I think I’ve come full circle now, striving for a more simple look, while making sure I am recording the stories of our lives.

What fills your time when you are NOT scrapbooking? Ummm…small children.

How do you choose what to include in your scrapbooks? I love to start with the photo and/or story and work from there. I never scrap in order of anything, I just grab whatever inspires me. Sometimes I have to scrap an event the day it happens, but I also love going way back to do more reflective journaling.

What types of materials do you use when you scrapbook? Digital kits- especially those with really good papers and a few unique elements. I love to print up bound albums, it’s very rewarding.

Where do you find inspiration for your pages? From the photos and stories themselves, and from galleries.

Who are your scrapbooking role models? Jaime Choi and Amanda Taylor are examples of the kind of scrapping I aspire to- simple clean designs and powerful journaling.

What is something your scrapbooking friends probably don’t know about you? That I am super messy. My brain is organized. My home is not.

What is on your scrapbooking “wish list”? Time! More time to spend with family and friends creating memories, and time to scrap the memories. OK, I really really want a fabulous zoom lens and speedlight for my DSLR.

What is your favorite quote?

Be the change you want to see.”

~ Ghandi

What do you hope future viewers of your scrapbooks will gain from your pages? I hope my kids look at these albums and appreciate the efforts I make to record the emotions of our daily moments. I’m quite sure they will be focused on the bad hairstyles though!

What is your best tip for fellow scrapbookers? Have fun with your scrapping! I found I enjoy it much more when my focus is on the real-life recording, and not necessarily technique and trend-driven. Get some words on your page!

We Can Do This Too!

Friday, November 27th, 2009

The holiday season is full of wonderful things, but it is also an enormous stressor for many people in many ways. I know, personally, it’s the time of year when I am most likely to feel overwhelmed … with places to be, things to get done, decisions to make, money to stretch … and that never-ending “mom” thing of trying to make everything perfect for everyone.

That’s why I just LOVE this layout by jenniferfox and decided it would make an ideal “Layout of the Week” on one of the busiest of the busy days in the holiday season … “Black Friday.”

I Can Do This by jenniferfox

"I Can Do This" by jenniferfox

Take a few minutes to read through Jennifer’s journaling. It’s just like being right inside her head … and it’s neat to see how this busy wife, mother, volunteer and individual took the time to step back for a minute and acknowledge that she is bigger than the moment and the stress and the overwhelming parts of life. It’s kind of like getting your very own little pep talk today as we forge head-first into December.

Congratulations, Jennifer, on inspiring us all to “just breathe” and remember that we, too, “can do this!”

Family Time

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Around our house, Thanksgiving is extra busy because my youngest son was born just a few days before the holiday. This year his birthday fell on Tuesday, so while most folks were busy getting ready for Turkey Day, we were knee deep in tween-age boys, birthday cake, presents and your general birthday chaos!

DSC08809

It’s also hunting season … and around our house, that’s significant. Let’s just say my husband chose Lewistown first for the hunting & fishing, second for the job. So pretty much everything revolves around the last hunt, the current hunt, the next hunt … you get the idea.

DSC08828

So as I write this on the eve of Thanksgiving, my husband has already packed a lunch for tomorrow and gone to bed, with the alarm set for 5-something so he can get out to his favorite spot before sunrise. Even though it is after 10 p.m., my house is crawling with my very awake nieces and nephew, who managed to sleep a chunk of their 6-plus hour drive over here with my parents and are now raring to go for a while yet.

DSC08835

There’s a thawed out (I hope) turkey in the fridge, four pumpkin pies stashed in the back porch (no room in the fridge), and a new layer of toys, popcorn, shoes & other “stuff” strewn across my all-day cleaning job.

DSC08847

So rather than concoct some clever Thanksgiving layout to share on this site for this Thanksgiving Day … or create some other appropriately-themed post, I decided to instead share a couple birthday photos before shifting focus away from the computer and on to the family.

Which is exactly where I hope you are on this wonderful holiday as well.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with you and yours … and we’ll catch up again after the turkey’s all gone!!

Alisa will take the lead on the Creative Team in March, but she’s already been busy creating lots of wonderful sample layouts for our gallery and playing an active role in the Community Forum, in addition to managing her active family and educating all those little ones.

Read on and find out how she manages to get so much done!!

Alisa Schenck (mommato7)

Please tell us a little about yourself … your family, your pets,  your backgroundI have been married for  17 years to my best friend. We have 7 amazing children -  3 girls and 4 boys ages from 16 to 3.  We homeschool all of our children and I love having everyone home! Our house is always buzzing with projects and noise and all kinds of activity! We include scrapbooking in our school day (of course!!) and most of my kids have their own scrapbooks that they work in.

How long have you been a scrapbooker & how did you first get started? I started scrapping when my third child was born, so about 12 years. I was invited to a Creative Memories crop and I was hooked! I was a CM consultant for almost 5 years. I started digital scrapbooking in September 2008 when I took my first class at Jessica Sprague’s site. I have taken a lot more of Jessica’s classes and been hooked on digi ever since!! I still like my paper and glue though and like being able to bounce back and forth between paper and digi!

How has your scrapbooking changed since that time? Ugh! Remember the shape templates….all my photos were cut into shapes and oh! Stickers…..there were stickers scattered on every page! Now my scrapbooking is more streamlined and I know more about design and page balance than when I started. One thing that has not changed is my journaling. I have always tried to capture the story behind the pictures. Those stories I want my grandkids to be able to read.

What fills your time when you are NOT scrapbooking? My family mostly and church activities.

How do you choose what to include in your scrapbooks? I like to include the daily stories of our lives. The little events as well as the bigger ones. Our faith is very important to us and I also document how our faith grows and how we see God working in our lives.

What types of materials do you use when you scrapbook? Right now about 75% of my pages are digital. I use Photoshop Elements 6. The rest of the time I am using my paper stash! I print my own layouts on my wide format printer (love it!!) And my albums are mostly the American Craft Cloth Albums.

Where do you find inspiration for your pages? I love to surf the many galleries on the web to get ideas. I also like taking paper layouts and using them as inspiration for creating a digi page!

Who are your scrapbooking role models? I follow a few people … Ali Edwards, Jessica Sprague.

What is something your scrapbooking friends probably don’t know about you? Hmmm….since I do layouts about everything in my life I think they know it all!!! Haha!!

What is on your scrapbooking “wish list”? I’d like to get Photoshop and start learning to digi scrap with that. I like PSE but know that with PS you can do a lot more!

What is your favorite quote? “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phillippians 4:13

What do you hope future viewers of your scrapbooks will gain from your pages? My hope is that they will see our life as it really was, the good, the bad and the ugly. And that through it all they see that God was the thread that wove and held it all together.

What is your best tip for fellow scrapbookers? Try new things!! It keeps your scrapbooking fresh and it’s fun to learn new skills!

Anything else you’d like to add? Get your stories down….don’t wait for the perfect kit or inspiration. Make the time to do it because your stories are important!

Current topics range from “All I Want for Christmas” to “Pet Peeves”. It’s fun reading and a great way to get to know your fellow Log Your Memory community members.

The Calendar Girls have also been busy already putting together sample pages for the Weekly Challenge prompts in the December 2009 Memory Logbook. Plus you’ll want to be sure you’re signed up for our Book Club, which will get you front row access to all of those inspiring Weekly Challenge pages. All you need to qualify for the Book Club is the purchase of any one of the Memory Logbooks. Check out our online store to see the options.

Have you entered our Cover Girl Contest?

Make a Wish …

eWishList copyIf you attempted to access the Log Your Memory eWishList this weekend, you found out it didn’t work out quite as we had planned. Unbeknownst to us, the system we had set up for the eWishList was going through some major migration this weekend, making our form unavailable. That transition is still underway.

As soon as that system is up and running again, we’ll post an announcement & you will be able to get your wishes delivered to Santa… :)

In Search of Balance

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

real-life-closeup-icon

For the first time in a long time, I finally took a break Saturday from the Web & books & all things related to this site and just simply scrapbooked. It felt good … a little bit of scrap-therapy goes a long way. So for today’s Sunday Inspiration, I thought I’d share a page I put together…

dotted_line

Balance. Yep, this is my new word for 2010. Last year’s word was “begin” . . . and well, I definitely did that, at least in terms of scrapbooking. Finally made the leap from just calling myself a scrapbooker to really doing it on a consistent basis. But I’ve always had this problem with finding & keeping some sort of balance in my life. And as a result, I’m a key candidate for burnout.

Balance by Kristin Rutten

"Balance" by Kristin Rutten

I’m not really sure why I am this way . . . maybe it’s just that I get very passionate about things I really love and as a result, have little time . . . patience . . . interest in much else. And I tend to focus exclusively on whatever that thing is for days, weeks, even months on end.  Unfortunately, this is to the nearly total neglect of all else in my life. And that is just not a healthy way to live, both figuratively and literally.

And now that I have finally found my, for lack of better word, “calling” in life . . . my new Log Your Memory venture . . . I really want to find a way to find that balance so that it is something I can sustain for a very long time. And so that I don’t totally miss out on and neglect the rest of my life in the process.

It’s not hard to see signs of this problem of mine. For instance, that wonderful birthday gift from my hubby last year – that elliptical machine in the corner – has not been touched in at least, um, several months. Well, not by me anyway. Danica thinks it makes a great climbing toy. And my kitchen? Possibly the ugliest kitchen in Lewistown. I have lots of ideas for re-doing it . . . and if I really wanted to, I could probably find the time and money to do it. But there it sits . . .  ugly as ever, complete with gross, burned, peeling linoleum stuff  on the counters, disgusting flowery contact paper on the dirty walls and that hideous peachy colored paint from decades ago.

And then there’s the laundry. I got it clean . . . I’m not quite that pathetic . . . but that dang pile sat on the dining room table for at least four days before I moved it up to our bedroom floor, where it sat for another week or two. But in the meantime, I sold lots of books, welcomed tons of new members to my Web site and put together a couple new books. All worthy items . . . just no balance in my day.

And sleep? What’s that? Haven’t been to bed as a “reasonable” hour in at least two months. Not one single time.  The girls get a fair amount of attention still, out of necessity. One can only handle so much whining & crying before succumbing to those needs. And the boys, well, they are with their dad this semester so I do manage to stop and try to “be” with them when they’re here. But that’s about the extent of my current balancing ability, much to my very patient and supportive husband’s chagrin. And I am the first to acknowledge, this needs to change.

So that’s why this is my word for 2010. Making “begin” my word and focus in 2009 seemed to work wonders. Here’s to hoping choosing balance will have the same effect in 2010!!!
